Librarian - Collections, Reference, and Instruction
Full-Time Faculty Position (some evening and weekend hours will be required)

Applications are invited for a Librarian to assist in directing the operations of the University’s Library, overseeing collection development activities, and providing leadership in the area of information/reference services and library research instruction. Duties may also include cataloguing of specialized materials and participation in the planning and implementation of new library services and technologies.

The successful candidate will have an Undergraduate degree with a strong focus in visual art, media, design, studio or art history as well as a Masters degree in Library science, or equivalent, from an ALA accredited institution. Two years of related work experience as a professional Librarian, or an equivalent combination of prior work experiences. Experience in providing information services and library instruction is required. Experience providing staff supervision is preferred. 

Demonstrated interest in professional development and involvement in library professional organizations is preferred. An active interest or involvement in contemporary arts practice is preferred. An active interest in mentoring co-op students is preferred.

Requited skills/Abilities:

·         Knowledge of innovative approaches to providing information services and library instruction.

·         Knowledge of information resources and collection development practices visual art, media, design, critical studies, and cross-disciplinary subject areas.

·         Knowledge of bibliographic tools and electronic resources related to visual art, media, design, critical studies and crossdisciplinary subjects.

·         Knowledge of contemporary artists’ books publishing and practices.

·         Familiarity with current cataloguing standards.

·         Proactive in exploring new service opportunities and modifying existing ones.

·         Familiarity with emerging technologies and their library and teaching applications.

·         Demonstrated ability to plan and manage projects in terms of budgeting, staffing, and allocating resources.

·         Superior communication skills.

·         Strong problem solving skills with an attention to detail.

·         Dedicated to team development and excellent peer interactions.

·         Ability to set priorities in an environment with multiple, simultaneous demands.

Some Typical Duties:

1.       Provides assistance and instruction to students, faculty, and the general public in the use of information resources in all disciplines and formats.

2.       Provides leadership and training to a team of library staff engaged in providing information services including in-person and virtual reference, and library research instruction.

3.       Plans and delivers library research instruction, both in person and online, including guides, workshops, orientations and tours. Coordinates library staff participating in these activities.

4.       Leads library collection development activities, including selection of print materials, serials, audiovisual materials, and streaming media. Works with the eResources Librarian to select electronic resources that meet the collections mandate of the library and to negotiate subscriptions and licenses for information resources as required. Consults with subject liaison librarians for the selection of discipline specific materials.

5.       Oversees donations of materials to the library including the evaluation and documentation of donated materials and liaising with donors. Consults with subject liaison librarians for the evaluation of discipline specific materials.

6.       Liaises with faculty in planning and providing library resources and services that support the delivery of University curriculum. Acts as a subject liaison librarian for one of the four Faculties.

7.       Contributes to the planning, content, and implementation of web based resources (LibGuides, blogs, social media)

8.       Participates in the preparation and revision of library policies and procedures, documentation, reports and statistics.

9.       Where necessary, performs original and copy cataloguing for specialized materials

10.    Engages in relevant professional development activities.

11.    Participates in Library, University and consortial committees as required.

12.    Oversees Library operations on assigned weekends and evening shifts, including assuming responsibility for opening and closing the Library, overseeing staff and students and maintaining a high standard of Library service.

13.    Oversees library operations in the absence of the University Librarian.
