Thanks to Daniel and others for their memories of Bill Walker. I'd like to mention one contribution that sort of falls out of the central circle of museum librarian roles he played.

Bill was the art librarian who worked with the subject specialists at the Library of Congress to prepare the fourth edition of the N classification (1970). He presented on the revisions at the 1974 conference in Detroit (scanned program available on ARLIS/NA website), my first conference. I regret that I don't have a vivid memory of that presentation, part of the program held at Cranbrook. I do have vivid memories of attending a board meeting or gathering at his home in Arlington, Virginia a few years later.

ARLIS/NA works because of the people and Bill was one of the greats.

Yes, Daniel, thank you for this.

Bill was a gracious, elegant gentleman, and a damned good painter, too.  We were lucky to have known him, there cannot be too many of his kind.

Thank you, Daniel, for your comforting, while sad, announcement of Bill's career and life.  I don't recall when I first met Bill, probably in about 1969 or '70, but I do recall seeing him annually thereafter until we both retired and experiencing his kindness, graciousness and wisdom.  I will miss thinking of him alive in this world. RIP, dear Bill.

While he was director of the Watson Library, he also worked with me and several colleagues on the formation of the Art Museum Libraries Consortium (AMLC). The AMLC's goal was to build and enrich the online library catalogs for the Brooklyn Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and MoMA which was successfully accomplished. He was a true visionary in forging a pathway for art museum libraries to be considered research centers for staff and public alike.
