Margie Ruddick, the pioneering landscape designer and author of Wild by Design and acclaimed architect Robin Elmslie Osler meet at the crossroads of design, ecology and urbanism to explore whether nature, in all its unruly wildness, can be an integral part of everyday living. The discussion is moderated by Annette Rose-Shapiro the Managing Editor of MODERN Magazine.

 

In her beautifully illustrated book, Wild by Design: Strategies for Creating Life-Enhancing Landscapes, award-winning designer Margie Ruddick urges designers to look beyond the rules often imposed by both landscaping convention and sustainability checklists. Instead, she offers a set of principles for a more creative and intuitive approach that challenges the entrenched belief that natural processes cannot complement high-level landscape design. A revealing look into the approach of one of sustainable landscape design’s most innovative practitioners, Wild by Design stretches the boundaries of landscape design, offering readers a set of broader, more flexible strategies and practical examples that allow for the unexpected exuberance of nature to be a welcome part of our gardens, parks, backyards, and cities.

Margie Ruddick is an international, award-winning landscape designer and is the recipient of the Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt National Design Award in Landscape Architecture, which honors excellence, innovation, and lasting achievement in design. In a 25+ year career Margie continues to be recognized for her pioneering, environmental approach to landscape design, forging a design language that integrates ecology, urban planning and architecture. Dwell Magazine 

identifies her as a “Landscape Design Icon” and Elle Décor names Margie Ruddick as one of five landscape designers “who are reshaping our world”. Current projects include a residential community in Taipei, scheduled to open in 2016. She is the Landscape Designer working alongside architects Richard Meier, Steven Harris, Annabelle Selldorf and Calvin Tsao. Recently completed projects include a transformative design for New York City’s Queens Plaza which has won awards for promoting a new idea of nature in the city. Margie Ruddick's completed international projects include Shillim Institute and Retreat in the Western Ghats of India. She also traveled in 1996 to Chengdu, Sichuan, China to work with artist Betsy Damon to design the Living Water Park, the first ecological park in China, which cleans polluted river water biologically.

In addition to her recent teaching position at Princeton, Margie has taught at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, Yale, The University of Pennsylvania, Parsons School of Design, and Schumacher College in England. Margie Ruddick is frequently invited to present her work and speak at universities, government forums and design conferences around the world.  

 

Robin Elmslie Osler established EOA/Elmslie Osler Architect in 1996 after receiving her undergraduate degree in architecture from the University of Virginia and her Master’s degree from Yale University in 1990. In 1989 she was awarded a fellowship from the American Association of University Women. Hailing from a family with deep American architectural roots, she has created a firm with a talented collaborative team that has built a rich and diverse portfolio of elegant, well-crafted work. Her expertise lies in integrating multiple challenges and distilling ideas into clear gracious design solutions, with a sensitivity to considerations of proportion, space, light and materials. Robin Elmslie Osler has held teaching positions at Parsons School of Design, Yale University, Pratt Institute and City College of the City of New York where she is currently an Adjunct Professor.  She has served on design reviews for the AIA Chicago and at the University of Michigan, University of Texas at Austin, Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, Yale University, Parsons, Pratt, City College of NY, Catholic University, the University of Virginia, New Jersey Institute of Technology, New York Institute of Technology and Columbia University. She has served on panels at venues including The National Building Museum, the Los Angeles Museum of Art & Design and the Chicago Architectural Foundation. The work of EOA has been published in international and national publications and recognized with multiple awards. Robin Elmslie Osler currently holds an architectural license from the states of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut, is a LEED Certified Professional and is certified by the National Council of Architectural Review Boards.

 

Annette Rose-Shapiro is the managing editor of MODERN Magazine and The Magazine ANTIQUES. After a decade of working as an art director, she made the switch to publishing as the managing editor and publisher of GLASS Quarterly at UrbanGlass, where she also studied and taught glass beadmaking. Annette Rose-Shapiro was also the executive editor of Cottages & Gardens Publications, where she covered interior design, landscape design, and architecture. When not working at the magazine, she is an avid practitioner of Kung Fu.

 

In its ninth year Architectural Explorations in Books, initiated and organized by Arezoo Moseni, is a series of engaging programs delving into the critical role that architecture publications play in the understanding of contemporary urban developments and structures. The events feature book presentations and discussions by acclaimed architects, critics, curators, designers, photographers and writers.
