Chairperson of Library Teaching, Learning, and Collection Development - Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Pratt Institute Libraries, an intellectual and informational hub for the Institute, seeks a dynamic educator to lead faculty librarians in building academic partnerships across Pratt’s diverse community in order to foster an environment of research and exploration. The Chair of Library Teaching, Learning, and Collection Development will work actively with campus faculty and administrators to develop the Libraries’ curriculum and collections, and promote and support innovative research, practice, and discourse. The successful candidate will be an energetic leader with a commitment to diversity and inclusion, who can apply her/his skills, experience, and vision toward promoting and strengthening the Libraries’ pedagogical programs while capably managing and fortifying library collections.

Reporting to the Director of Libraries, the Chair is responsible for the administration and management of the Libraries’ curricular programming and collection development efforts. Curricular responsibilities will involve training and evaluating academic professionals, spearheading information literacy efforts, and assessing focused teaching and consultation services that support the Institute’s curriculum and student learning. The Chair will work with the Libraries’ department heads and faculty librarians to develop a library-wide mentoring program, designed to advance the knowledge and skills of Library staff around the Libraries’ pedagogical mission. On the collection development side, the Chair will lead a team of subject selectors to assure the quality and scope of the Libraries’ collections and work with them to analyze and evaluate quantitative and qualitative collection data, take initiative to set priorities and propose solutions based on these analyses, and lead long range planning efforts that follow trends in academic libraries as they apply to the needs of the Institute.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching and Learning:

·         Direct and participate in the Libraries’ liaising efforts with programs across the Institute.

·         Coordinate the development of an information literacy education and assessment plan to be integrated into the Institute’s curriculum, centers, and schools.

·         Plan educate-the-educator support for Institute faculty and instructors to enrich skills in instructional design and assessment.

·         Assess library services from a pedagogical perspective and work with department heads in mentoring staff, graduate assistants, and student employees to follow agreed upon best practices.

·         Develop innovative pedagogical approaches that take advantage of emerging technologies.

·         Participate in providing reference service and library instruction.

 

Collection Development:

·         Ensure the health of the Libraries’ collections by setting annual goals for collection development, establishing guidelines for assessing collections, and coordinating the activities of library liaisons.

·         Oversee the collection resources budget, track expenditures, and collaborate with library liaisons on any proposed revisions to the budget.

·         Maintain and update the collection development policy as needed, in order to meet current research needs of students, staff, and faculty, while supporting the evolving curriculum and emerging trends in scholarly publishing.

·         Develop, support and promote the Special Collections and Archives.

 

Library Administration:

·         Collaborate with other library administrators to develop various pedagogical outreach activities on campus, as well as in-house enrichment to assist library staff in support of teaching and learning.

·         Lead, evaluate, and advocate for library faculty as academic professionals who actively support the research and educational missions of the Institute.

·         Serve on the Libraries’ Management Team, Institute-wide committees, and other Library committees, as needed.

·         Coordinate searches for hiring library faculty.

·         Play a key role in grant proposal writing and fundraising efforts.

·         Supervise reporting associated with annual surveys and accreditation.

·         Engage in research, scholarly publication, and professional service activities.

 

SALARY: commensurate with experience and qualifications.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
MLS from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent and additional graduate degree required. Preference will be given to candidates possessing expertise in art, design, architecture or humanities. A demonstrated record of research and teaching is strongly preferred.

Experience:

Required:
• A minimum of 5 years professional experience in an academic library setting required, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
• Demonstrated knowledge of curriculum development and outcomes assessment of student learning.
• Thorough knowledge of information literacy standards and practices.
• Experience engaging diverse populations.
• Adept at utilizing online platforms for teaching and learning and demonstrated effectiveness integrating a wide array of technologies with traditional services and resources.

Preferred:
• Experience mentoring professional staff.
• History of supervising staff in a collective bargaining environment.
• Experience managing schedules, budgets and personnel.
• Skilled at developing and executing effective outreach efforts.
• Experience working in a consortial environment.

Skills:
Ability to engage effectively with diverse faculty and students, and knowledge of principles of diversity and inclusion are required. Must have demonstrated skills in developing and implementing services and programs; and a strong pedagogical approach, outlook, and commitment. Excellent analytical and organizational skills and a deep understanding of applied technology are essential. Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills.
