Dear ARLIS/NA Colleagues,

I recently communicated with members of the ARLIS/NA Architecture Section (and the section’s moderator) about my role as ARLIS/NA Liaison to the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH). I proposed to post the monthly SAH Newsletters to the Architecture Section’s listserv (ARCHSEC-L) and to mention the fact that I would be doing this in a message on ARLIS-L, with a suggestion that anyone interested in seeing these newsletters could subscribe to the ARCHSEC-L. I received the go ahead from Architecture Section colleagues, so this message serves as my notice.

Please note that SAH Newsletters feature a monthly Booklist column, compiled by Barbara Opar, as well as regular updates about SAHARA (http://www.sah.org/publications-and-research/sahara), SAH Archipedia (http://www.sah.org/publications-and-research/sah-archipedia), and more. The December Newsletter is included below to whet your appetite. (You may notice that the ARLIS/NA conference is listed under “SAH Chapter and Partner News.”)

I still plan to post information about the annual SAH conference (or other important SAH developments) to ARLIS-L, but will assume that anyone interested in the full SAH Newsletter will subscribe ARCHSEC-L. Subscription information can be found at: https://arlisna.org/organization/sections/95-architecture-section.

Please note that the annual SAH Conference will be held in Glasgow, June 7-11, 2017 and registration is now open! For more information, see:

Best wishes,

Highlights from SAHARA: Suburban Housing
This month’s highlights from SAHARA includes 20th-century suburban housing from around the globe. Searching “suburb” in the collection returns hundreds of images from across the United States and well beyond. Look for Mark Hinchman’s views of Subang Jaya, in Malaysia, as well as Dell Upton’s view of a cul-de-sac surrounded by oil tanks in Signal Hill, California.

Edilia and François-Auguste de Montêquin Junior Fellowship Research Report
By Savannah Esquivel
My dissertation addresses architectural ornament in Mexico’s sixteenth-century mendicant monasteries. It is concerned specifically with a mode of illusionistic painting which is characterized by the simulation of architectural elements and the rendering of intricate geometric motifs in fresco and tempera murals. My dissertation research to date has been based in Mexico, where I have conducted on-site research at sixty monasteries.

Scaffolding and a City in Section: An Introduction to La Habana
By Danielle S. Willkens, 2015 H. Allen Brooks Travelling Fellow
It is an understatement to say that it is an interesting time to be in Cuba. As an architectural designer and historian studying the impact of tourism, Havana has been a complex, and at times confounding, classroom. In just the last thirty days, the length of a traditional tourist visa, record numbers of Americans have toured the capital, the first commercial flights from the United States landed in Havana since the two nations restored diplomatic relations after fifty-five years of silence, and the Cuban news stations extensively covered both an election that may impact renewed dialogues and the death of Fidel Castro.
