Project Archivist - Hedda Sterne Foundation, New York, NY

The Hedda Sterne Foundation is dedicated to exploring the legacy of the artist Hedda Sterne (1910-2011) and her philosophy of art as a process of engagement and discovery. Established by the artist's will and endowed by her estate in 2013, the Foundation maintains an archive and collection of artwork spanning eight decades. With these collections, the Foundation promotes the study of Sterne in the context of her era through the support of exhibitions and scholarship.

The Hedda Sterne Foundation is seeking a Project Archivist to review and process the HSF archives. The HSF archives are comprised primarily of materials created and collected by the artist, including personal and professional correspondence, datebooks, handwritten notes and manuscripts, photographs of her artwork, an extensive library, exhibition ephemera, and many other materials. The collection is also growing to encompass materials generated by the Foundation since its establishment in 2013.

The HSF archives have been maintained largely as left by the artist, and the Foundation aims to make the collection accessible and available for research purposes as soon as possible. The Project Archivist will work closely with staff to arrange, describe, and create finding aids for the collection. Additionally, digitization of key assets will be prioritized. Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to:

Processing - Survey, arrange, and describe the collection, as prioritized in collaboration with staff. Create detailed finding aids for researchers' use.

Preservation - Following best practices for the handling and storage of fragile materials, identify items within the collection that may require additional attention and recommend preservation strategies. Consult with conservators if necessary

Cataloging and Digitization - Work with staff to catalogue key collections (are you talking about archival collections or artwork?) in the HSF database, and digitize key assets for reference purposes.

Strategic Planning - Develop recommendations for the future of the HSF archives, with a focus on accessibility, storage, and growth.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

* Degree in Library Science or related field
* At least 3-years' experience processing archival collections
* Knowledge of 20th century art
* Knowledge of archives best practices and standards, such as EAD and DACS
* Experience with technology initiatives, including digitization and access projects
* Familiarity with databases, specifically CollectiveAcesss
* Excellent written and oral communication skills
* Active role within the archives community

This is a part time (2-3 days per week), 12-month position with a start date of January 2017.
