Reference Librarian II, The Getty Research Institute provides high level of wide-ranging reference, outreach, instruction, and information services in-person, by telephone, and
virtually to an international user community consisting of readers, staff, volunteers, residential scholars, and the public. Provides in-depth research services through individualized assistance to scholars.
- Manages, researches, and answers complex and specialized reference questions regarding the Research Library’s collections, including requests for reproduction or permission
that are received by email from outside researchers
- Staffs the Reference Desk. Provides in-person and phone reference and instruction assistance to library users and the general public both who are on-site and off-site. Provides
back up for Special Collections Reading Room supervision as needed
- Provides outreach in a variety of ways. May include giving library tours, providing database instruction, coordinating class visits to use special collections, and staffing
events to promote the Research Library
- Collaborates with colleagues to devise and/or revise policies and procedures for reference services.
- Applies creative solutions while assisting in developing or improving practices and procedures which use current and emerging technologies
- Collaborates within and across departments on a variety of activities, including usability, website, and social media-related projects
- May advise and participate as the Research Library representative in wider GRI working groups and/or research projects
- Represents the GRI externally in field of expertise as appropriate
- Maintains high level knowledge of professional activities and trends
- Keeps current on technological advances in field of expertise and incorporates knowledge into primary activities
- May publish, present, and/or participate in research projects and/or exhibitions related to area of expertise
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Art History or related discipline; MLIS from an ALA-accredited library school; graduate- level work or equivalent research experience in Art History or
a related discipline; advanced subject degree preferred
- 2-3 years library experience with at least 2 years in reference services
- May require some supervisory experience
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of art history, reference techniques and research strategies
- Reading knowledge of 2 foreign languages
- Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with a wide range of staff and patrons; critical thinking and problem solving skills
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Flexibility/ability to react quickly and positively to change and ability to accept/create new opportunities and challenges essential
- Must be able to work independently and within teams
- Understanding and knowledge of history, theory, and professional practices associated with materials found in special collections, including rare books, manuscripts, and graphic
materials
- Understanding of intellectual property rights, copyright, rights management, and donor and user privacy issues
- Familiarity with library standards, best-practices, library applications, computer systems, online databases, digital imaging technology, user access, and image delivery technology
