To celebrate Open Access Week 2016, the ARLIS/NA Public Policy Committee has put together an announcement<https://arlisna.org/images/committees/pubpol/Open_Access_Week_2016.pdf> about all the ways ARLIS is supporting open access. We have also created an Open Access FAQ<https://www.arlisna.org/images/committees/pubpol/OA_FAQ_2016_1.pdf> and a list of OA resources<https://arlisna.org/images/committees/pubpol/OA_Resource_List_2016.pdf>. You can see all these documents and more at the PPC webpage.<https://www.arlisna.org/organization/committees/86-public-policy-committee>

How is ARLIS/NA participating in the Open Access Movement? And how can ARLIS/NA members contribute to Open Access?

ARLIS/NA Research & Reports Going Open

The ARLIS/NA Occasional Papers and other publications that were published by and for sale from ARLIS/NA will be made openly available for download on our website! Once they're available you'll find them at: https://arlisna.org/publications/arlis-na-research-reports

ARLIS/NA Creates Open Access Task Force

Formed in spring 2016, the Open Access Task Force (OATF) was charged with researching and developing recommendations for the implementation of an ARLIS/NA open access publishing program that builds upon the Society’s existing open access Learning Portal service. This fall, a second task force (OATF2) will conduct a detailed analysis of the options available to support a greater degree of openness for the society’s publishing program.

Help Make ARLIS/NA’s Art Documentation More Open

This Open Access Week let’s all try to make Art Documentation<https://www.arlisna.org/publications/art-documentation> as open as possible! The University of Chicago Press currently allows authors to make their articles openly available in institutional repositories after a one-year embargo. This means that Art Doc relies on its authors to make their work open access, and many studies have shown that despite a big push for self-archiving, deposit rates remain low. Let’s make sure Art Doc is an exception! If you’ve had an article published in Art Doc, take a moment this Open Access Week to deposit it in your institution’s open repository (you can even deposit the formatted PDF). We also encourage you to find out if you can deposit any other articles you have authored. You can check whether the journal allows self-archiving at SHERPA-RoMEO<http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo/issn/0730-7187/>.

ARLIS/NA Plans Open Access related Conference Panels and Workshops

The Public Policy Committee is working closely with Heather Gendron on her President's Panel that will focus on Open Access at the 2017 Annual Conference in New Orleans.

The ARLIS/NA Fair Use Instruction Task Force has been working steadily to help librarians teach fair use. Fair Use is a key component of open access as it enables scholars to use images as part of analytic writing without onerous fees. Stay tuned for details of a Fair Use workshop at the 2017 Conference.
