Educating Future Architects, Designers and Artists: Supporting Students and Professionals in Design Fields

Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA), Ohio Valley Chapter Fall Meeting, November 3 - 4, 2016

Kent State University, Kent, Ohio

Hosted by Kent State University Libraries

See the 2016 Fall Meeting page for details.

Kent State University has embarked on a large-scale campus-wide initiative to update, renovate, and build 21st century student facilities for learning and living: classrooms, laboratories, studios, libraries, study spaces, residence halls and athletics facilities.  These Foundations of Excellence <www.kent.edu/foundations/completed-projects> projects have benefited Kent’s programs in Art, Architecture and Design, areas of particular interest to members of ARLIS.

For our fall meeting faculty, Deans and staff from Kent State’s School of Fashion, Center for the Visual Arts and Center for Architecture and Environmental Design will explain how their curriculum has embraced these new opportunities for experiential learning with 21st c. technology.  A unique feature of the meeting is the opportunity to tour the labs and studios where much of this experiential learning takes place including maker spaces and specialized labs that support these programs: materials lab, wind tunnel, lighting lab, Belden Brick Materials Library and Gallery, and an oversized knitting machine.

Staff from the Kent State University Library will discuss how they have played a leadership role integrating and supporting these new curricular programs and technologies through library services, event sponsorship, and developing needed spaces.
