The novel Headlong by Michael Frayn (author of the brilliant farce Noises Off) is about the discovery of a Bruegel. William Gaddis' The Recognitions is a Faust story about a young man who wants to become a painter but gets lured into forging old masters instead. It's very long, very worth reading, and contains a virtuoso scene of a New York art party of the late Forties or early Fifties. I'm sure there are dozens of others.
