Kelsey, The rule about artist as main entry didn't survive the transition from AACR to RDA. That is the principal reason that way fewer catalogs have artist as the authorized access point (aka main entry aka 100). AECs are to be treated like other publications. In most cases, the artist is playing more of a subject relationship with the catalog, but the variant access point for the artist relates to the illustrated matter. The ARLIS/NA Cataloging Advisory Committee has had significant discussion about conventional collective titles (CCT), such as "Artist. Photographs. Selections." CAC members have not found CCTs helpful and sent a proposal to LC/PCC to add artist monographs and catalogs to the list of exceptions in RDA 25.1. We received a reply from the LC Policy and Standards Office. By date. Including exhibition catalogs" as in Table N6 of the N classification schedule. Whether an artist is still living does not have an effect on authorized or variant access point. Whether an artist played an active role in the creation of the catalog, and is so credited, does have an effect. That is, if the catalog says "Artist: recent work, text by the artist," the artist will probably get the 100. Hope this makes sense. Do not hesitate to ask if you want more spilled words.
