Just remembering . . . a tour to the Mattress Factory there in Pittsburgh was a highlight of the 2000 ARLIS/NA conference!!  I remember a small gallery whose walls were completely covered in wax!  Then there was the tour of the Warhol Museum . . . and the Heinz history museum . . . . Pittsburgh is a great city for the arts!  Sorry to go off-topic!!  --Joan

Wow, what a great question. I was a business librarian for many years (in between working in art museums and becoming an art librarian) so this is fun.

It could be interesting to look at old trade publications about the mattress industry. You can find these in Ebsco’s Business Source Complete or similar.  BSC also has industry reports, but these tend not to get into the history of the industry, and when they do, they refer to historic as the early 2000’s

This timeline might be helpful:http://bettersleep.org/mattresses-and-more/history-of-the-mattress

This website has some interesting citations you could follow, including Webster’s Encyclopedia of Domestic Economy (digging around on archive.org looks promising)

Book: Warm and Snug, the History of the Bed

And to mix things up, there’s the Mattress Factory here in Pittsburgh, which is a contemporary art museum that is in a former Stearns & Foster building: http://www.mattress.org/

Depending on what the person is interested in, you could look up certain techniques or materials, such as tufting.

I’d love to know what the person ends up pursuing!

Is there a national mattress industry organization?  They might have published a history at some point.  --Joan

Maybe this from EBSCOhost:

Thomas, Larry. "Bedding Today." Furniture/Today 25.22 (2001): 41.

Abstract: "Focuses on History Channel's show 'Modern Marvels' in the United States. Feature of the history of the mattress industry; Inclusion of an interview with Serta vice president of marketing Bob Malin; Discussion on the development of the continuous-coil innerspring unit; Importance of the box spring in mattresses."

Lots of articles on MATTRESS INDUSTRY in Furniture/Today.

Mattresses: Corncobs? Straw? Rice hulls? Feather beds? Futons? Seems a matter of finding the point at which mattress production becomes an industry. Interesting question, I have no light to shed.

But on a sidenote: In the J. Walther Thompson Company archives in the collections at Duke’s John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History is a wonderful and occasionally scandalous record of a sales campaign for the Simmons Beautyrest mattress account. See the Lucile Turnbach Platt Papers, 1926-1930. Simmons has been huge in the industry for such a long time—perhaps start with that company’s origins? Might open up the landscape.

Subject: [ARLIS-L] Research Question in Textiles

Hello all,

I hope someone can help me with this difficult request! I have a research consultation tomorrow morning with an MFA student in Textiles who is writing about the history of mattresses. I can point her towards all the usual art-related databases, but I was wondering if there was anything out there that is more specialized that might address production, manufacture, and/or history in general from a textile perspective.

Any advice/resources would be warmly welcomed.

Many thanks,

Jasmine
