We have a copy of Sleeping Around: The Bed from Antiquity to Now. In the index: mats, mattresses, and textiles. The preface mentions a 1966 "landmark show, The Bed" at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts (now the Museum of Arts and Design). Might be worth a look!

Thomas Register of American Manufacturers would not have a history per se, but could reveal long years of different types of mattresses.

The online version is ThomasNet.com - I did a quick check and it looks like current info only. Your university library may still have print editions.

Mattresses probably started when humans did and the Thomas Register started only in 1898 and is for the U.S. only, so is limited by time and place.

Perhaps histories of domestic life in different parts of the world would have something.

Hello all,

I hope someone can help me with this difficult request! I have a research
consultation tomorrow morning with an MFA student in Textiles who is writing
about the history of mattresses. I can point her towards all the usual
art-related databases, but I was wondering if there was anything out there
that is more specialized that might address production, manufacture, and/or
history in general from a textile perspective.

Any advice/resources would be warmly welcomed.

Many thanks,

Jasmine
