Hi Sara,Having conducted a lot of architectural history research, down to the very granular level of preparing documentation on specific buildings, I would advise that Simine's word "guess" is highly appropriate. The data on building dates could be based on an "opening day," as Simine suggests; a cornerstone laying; a groundbreaking; a date on a preliminary drawing or rendering. Patrons should be cautioned that if any date surrounding the design, construction, or completion of a building is important to their research, they be prepared to deal with fuzzy information or to indicate their sources in the text or in endnotes!
Best wishes,Sally Stokes (former curator of the National Trust for Historic Preservation Library Collection and past interim head of the Art and Architecture Libraries, all at the University of Maryland, College Park)

Sometimes a start date is included in the data but the completion date is the official date. Although I have no idea if completion means that’s the end of construction or “opening day”. I would guess official end of construction.    Best,    Simine Marine Serials/Systems Librarian and Data Protection Officer Architectural Association Library 36 Bedford Square London WC1B 3ES Tel: +44 (0)207 887 4117    PPlease consider the environment before printing this e-mail    From: ARLIS/NA List [mailto:[log in to unmask]]On Behalf Of MacDonald, Sara

Subject: [ARLIS-L] Architecture citation question: year for buildings is based on what?    Dear ARLIS members,    How is the year usually given after the name of a building determined? Is it the commission date? Groundbreaking? Construction?     I appreciate your help!    Sara MacDonald Public Services Librarian, University Libraries The University of the Arts 320 South Broad Street Philadelphia, PA 19102 (215) 717-6282 library.uarts.edu ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
