And I'll add that we did have a PhD student who did a fantastic exercise with her Intro to World Art students this summer. They explored, compared, and critiqued Art history textbooks, noting which areas of the world were represented over time. If you have the shelf space and interested faculty, it could be interesting to save them, but if shelf space is low, know you can always borrow older texts from us, should the opportunity arise. I know the first edition included NO women artists and it was motivational for scholars of women artists. But of course someone who wanted to do that kind of research would probably already know which editions they wanted to look at and could get them on Interlibrary loan. You might want to ask some of your art history faculty-especially women on that faculty. But unless you have a strong graduate program or faculty that have that interest, it doesn't seem worth the shelf space.
