Please join us in the gardens of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center in Santa Fe, NM for the forum “More than an Icon:  Balancing Authenticity, Idealism, and Expectations at Single-Focus Institutions.”

On Wednesday, September 14th through Friday, September16th, 2016, the Research Center will bring together a national community to reflect upon and explore the issues surrounding museums, institutions, and foundations focusing on a single individual.

Dialogue and conversation will revolve around the following questions:

-       What does it mean for an institution to represent an individual?

-       How do you create an authentic experience?

-       What is the role of research in the work that institutions do, and how is that shared with the public?

-       How are difficult themes or topics managed and explored with the public?

-       How do human experiences and “pilgrimage behaviors” affect interpretation?

A pre-forum excursion to Georgia O’Keeffe’s houses in Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch will take place on September 14th to explore the issues around historic properties, legacy, and authenticity, followed by a conversation with thought-leaders over lunch at the Abiquiu Inn.

The keynote address, given by noted museum consultant and writer Elaine Gurian, will be held at the Drury Hotel with a rooftop reception prior to Ms. Gurian’s talk.

Forum speakers will include representatives from The Andy Warhol Museum, Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios, and Presidential centers, as well as museum professional staff, independent scholars, and artists.
