Shirley Phillipson Pollock Internship in Art Librarianship

 

Reports to:                 DMA Librarian

Status:                        PT, hourly (21 hours per week maximum)

Dates:                          September 2016 – May 2017

Stipend:                      $17.85 per hour ($14,244.30 total stipend)

The Mayer Library at the Dallas Museum of Art is offering a paid, part-time nine-month internship to a graduate student in library or information science with an interest in art librarianship to start in the fall of 2016.  The Pollock Intern will gain practical experience in art museum library work, including cataloging, collection management, and public services.   There will be focused projects throughout the internship, but the intern will have an opportunity to explore desired areas of interest. 

 

Essential Responsibilities:

·         Enhancing and creating bibliographic records

·         Creating institutional bibliographies

·         Reference work

·         Designing a library display or writing a blog post for Uncrated

·         Collection maintenance

 

Education, Experience, and Qualifications:

·         Current enrollment in an ALA-accredited master’s program for library and/or information science

·         Coursework in cataloging required.  Experience with original and copy cataloging preferred

·         Knowledge of AACR2, RDA, and Library of Congress and Dewey classification systems

·         Interest in art librarianship with an educational background in art history

·         Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to work independently 

 

The Mildred R. and Frederick M. Mayer Library is the art research library of the Dallas Museum of Art.  Originally established in 1936, the collection opened to the public in 1944, and has grown over time into an essential resource open for use by DMA staff, docents, and the general public.  The non-circulating collection numbers 100,000 volumes and supports research on all areas of the Museum’s encyclopedic collection.  For more information, visit http://dma.org/research/library.
