Hello all,

The Academy of Art University’s Director of Assessment is participating in this year’s WASC Assessment Leadership Academy and her project will focus on information literacy across the university with a goal of piloting IL specific assessments using high-level signature assignments in the art and design departments at the undergraduate level.

The Academy currently does university wide assessment of IL and Research skills at the sophomore level in the Liberal Arts department that focuses on traditional IL skills. (appropriate research topic, variety and quality of sources, correct citations, etc.) Research skills are also assessed in the BFA portfolio review; however formal assessment has not been implemented between those two points.

Questions for the group:

I have had a difficult time finding examples of university wide Information Literacy policies that are geared towards art and design curriculum. Does anyone have a policy that they would be willing to share with us as a guide/template?

Do you currently have a curriculum map of research assignments and rubrics in the majors that demonstrate information literacy skills as they relate to art and design research?

Do librarians at your institution participate in research assignment and rubric design, and if so how did that come about at your institution?

Does your library provide any kind of training materials for faculty in relation to research assignment and assessment design, and if so what types of training do you provide?

Has your institution formally or informally defined what information literacy means in relation to art and design professionals? Does your institution define IL using the ACRL/ARLIS IL standards or have you embraced a wider definition of IL to accommodate typical research methodologies in the art and design field? (i.e Observational research, UX design, Prototyping, etc.)

Has your institution reached “critical mass” of adoption of well-designed research assignments and assessment implementation in the art and design departments?

If anyone has any information they would be willing to share with us about any of the above topics please respond to me directly or reply to this post on the listserv.

Thank you,

Debra Sampson, MLIS
