Call for Participants: ARLIS/NA 2017 Panel Session:
Topic: Hacks and Innovative Approaches to Cataloging Non-Roman Script Materials
We are looking for additional speakers to join our 90 minute panel session on cataloging non-Roman scripts. At Watson Library (and we imagine, at many of our peer institutions), the challenge of identifying and acquiring material from under-represented
and previously inaccessible regions, has been superseded by the challenge of cataloging it properly and promptly.
To complement presentations on recent initiatives and practices adopted by Watson Library (such as using volunteers and non-library professionals for non-Roman character entry, and using Metadata Maker and other online and open access resources and utilities),
we are inviting additional speakers to share their insight and experience on any of the following, or other related topics:
- Online and open access tools and resources, such as:
- transliteration engines
- metadata input tools
- Macros, keyboard shortcuts, and other quick fixes
- Use of national library databases (for exporting MARC records, etc.)
- Consortium / cooperative cataloging approaches
- Cost-effective vendor shelf-ready cataloging
- Effectively using volunteers & non-professionals
Timeline:
- Let us know if you are interested and your topic by Monday, June 6, 2016
- You will be notified if your topic fits our session by Wednesday, June 8, 2016
- We will submit the proposal on Thursday, June 9, 2016 (extended deadline)
