I could not agree more Lee!  We need both the Sched and a printed program (or at the very least) a PDF we can print at home.  --Joan

Subject: [ARLIS-L] My Two Cents - Printed Conference Programs

Without repeating all the comments that have gone before, I’d like to add my bit to the conversation. Most of you will recall that we did indeed have a printed program for the Ft. Worth, TX 2015 meeting, as well as a printed Convocation program. The recent co-meeting held with VRA required a different approach (as has been pointed out) and it required a change in the program from what was the norm for ARLIS/NA. I am one of the many who did not understand the many pages and great deal of space and detail given to the Poster Sessions in the Joint Conference Program, but that is certainly a moot point.

In addition, I am one of those who likes Sched very, very much, and I have used it faithfully for the last three meetings. I especially like having the daily reminder sent to me, noting any change in location of sessions, and I hope that does not change. But I do prefer having a printed conference program, with details on sessions, and I hope that we will be going back to that for our NOLA 2017 meeting.

Because we did not have the printed information at hand, I had to rely on my iPhone to verify speakers’ names and institution. Even if this information is quickly spoken and or printed on the screen, it is difficult for me to grasp. The printed program provides this data (for me) in a way that the online one cannot  - I do not want to spend my session time staring at my iPhone screen trying to verify details. I would rather pay attention to the speakers and their visuals.

I have been attending these meetings long enough to remember the absolutely beautiful programs printed for awhile in the 1980s that had the conference schedule on one side of the program, and the city guide (restaurants, bookstores, galleries, transportation, etc.) on the other. I finally culled those from my files, but I do still have a 1987 city guide (separate by that time) titled “Inside Washington: A Guide to the Nation’s Capitol,” which I kept because of its usefulness for other meetings I attended in D.C.,  as well as for my periodic D.C. research trips.

I know those beauties of old are too expensive to produce today, but I hope our (current as of 2015) practice of printing a Conference Program returns in 2017.

See you in New Orleans!

Lee
