The Sea So Great, Our Boats So Small: The IFLA Risk Register and Art Documentation at Risk

All libraries face the possibility of sudden and irreparable loss from a natural or man-made disaster. At such moments, rapid assistance from external partners can make all the difference. To facilitate expedited response to library disasters, IFLA recently established the IFLA Risk Register. Similar to the ICOM and ICOMOS registers for museums and monuments, the IFLA Risk Register gathers information about unique and irreplaceable documentary heritage from institutions and individuals and holds this information in confidence until a trigger event. When disaster strikes, IFLA provides critical guidance to Blue Shield partners and UNESCO in order to guarantee a swift and targeted response.

At the 2016 IFLA World Library and Information Congress in Columbus, Ohio, the IFLA Art Libraries Section is sponsoring a session to highlight the IFLA Risk Register and to promote greater participation in it—especially among holders of art’s documentary heritage. An introduction by IFLA staff to the Risk Register will be contextualized with case studies on library disaster recovery and preparedness. We are seeking speakers who can thoughtfully address the realities of coping with threats from natural hazards, such as fires, floods, and earthquakes, in a library context. Accounts of recovery campaigns and local or regional preparedness programs are especially desired. Papers on best practices and other theoretical approaches are also of interest. Contributions that have an art library focus are particularly welcome.

Approximately twenty minutes will be allowed for a summary delivery of the paper at the conference; the full written paper is not to be read. The full text of the final paper should be no more than twenty pages, double spaced. Final papers and presentations must be in one of the official IFLA languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Russian, or Spanish. All papers presented at the 2016 World Congress will be made available through the IFLA Library under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license.
