Dear Colleagues,

I would like to draw your attention to two new features on the Department of Image Collections’ webpage of the National Gallery of Art website.  Caught by the Camera’s Eye highlights collateral portraiture in 19th-century Anglo-American photographic documentation of architecture. Passers-by or children are accidently photographed or deliberately posed and not only capture a snippet of time but also offer a sense of scale.  As an example, research on photographs of a house in Brookline, Massachusetts identified it as the summer home of Mr. and Mrs. John Lowell Gardner. We believe that Mrs. Gardner, better known as art patron and museum founder Isabella Stewart Gardner, can be seen sitting, second from right. This feature was produced by Andrea Gibbs, Deputy Chief and Image Specialist for Architecture.

The second new feature, The Solemnity of Shadows: Juan Laurent’s Vision of Spain, revisits a National Gallery of Art Library exhibition of the same title. In this version, produced by Thomas O’Callaghan, Image Specialist for Spanish Art (who also arranged the original exhibition), we have included a larger representation of the department’s extensive holdings by this 19th-century Spanish photographer. The feature includes an expanded bibliography and links to three albums that have been digitized and mounted in the Library’s Mercury catalogue (albums A223, A286, and A287). This feature was designed to honor Juan Laurent for his 200th birthday.

I hope you will view these and our other features from the department’s holdings at:
