Greetings all,

As promised last week, I am following up with links to images of the Herron Art Library and the Artist Book Alcove, Display Cases, Conference Room, and storage areas.  I received so many requests for photos that I thought it might be most efficient to send one email to the list with links to images for people to access as desired.

I have been beyond fortunate to have a most generous donor since 2005, committed to helping me build a museum quality collection, user spaces, and display areas.  We just completed another renovation to our space this summer which includes a beautiful new display cabinet, a custom built circulation/reference desk, and custom paneling throughout the library.  Below please find links and more information about our space.

A few photos of the Herron Art Library Artist Book Alcove, Display cases, Conference Room, and Storage may be found here,   https://iu.box.com/s/gxpujtcue5i8v9odm2gt266q1e6qinva

For the Storage area we worked with Campus Facilities Services to ensure the storage area appropriately met HVAC needs for storing the collection.  We selected industrial shelving because it provided the most flexible storage for our collection.  Our collection ranges from miniature to very large pieces.  I hired a bookarts student to maintain the preservation activities and assist with other duties related to the fine press/bookarts collection.  She is in the process of making a custom box for each item in the collection – it helps secure the item and manage storage space better.  In regards, to cataloging and shelving items, we take a photo of each item as it is acquired and place that thumbnail image along with the call number and barcode on a slip of paper that is kept with the item-box.  You can see the boxes and slips of paper per item in the photos found under the link above.  The shelves in the storage area run 6’L x 2’W x 10’H, and, 4’L x 2’W x 10‘H.  The storage room measures 17’ x 11.5’.

Our collection is currently around +/- 1,000 items I believe.  We are working to scan and upload images of our collection into our content management system, http://indiamond6.ulib.iupui.edu/cdm/landingpage/collection/BookArts .  We also host the archive to the Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here Coalition collections, http://www.ulib.iupui.edu/collections/AMSSH . There is an article in the current issue of Art Documentation on the Al-Mutanabbit Street Collection at IUPUI which includes a photo of the Artist Book Alcove J

We have uploaded a number of images of our events over the years to Flickr where you may see more images of the Herron Library space, https://www.flickr.com/photos/herronartlibrary/albums

Many, many, many thanks to you all for the opportunity to share my library space and collection!!!

Best!!!

Sonja

Yes, please, I would very much appreciate some photos. I have a feeling we are going to have to go the custom route, but I’m trying to get a budget figure.

For example, it would be great to know how many volumes you have stored on x sq feet or liner feet of shelving. We will start small, but branch out quickly I’m sure. Margaret

Hi Margaret,

I am happy to send photos of our fine press/artist book display areas and storage room to your email address if you like.  When the space was planned, I worked with Campus Facilities Services to address the HVAC issues for the storage area – we also installed industrial shelving as it allows for storage of a greater range of sizes and weight.  We use flat file cabinets for the broadsides and prints.

Best,

Sonja

Hello Wisdom.

I am seeking advice on the types of shelving and storage cases that are used for housing artists’ books, and the vendors through which our library may procure these items. We are in the planning stages of developing an artists’ books collection, now that space has been freed up in Arts Library for a small special collections area. I’m putting together some budget figures and thus if you can send info about vendors storage / shelving that one can used for housing artists’ books, it would be much appreciated.

Thank you.
