At Scholes Library of Ceramics (NY State College of Ceramics at Alfred), several of the popular art periodicals (Artforum, Kunstforum) were kept on reserve until bound. They were moved to open current periodical shelves last academic year. Bound periodicals don't circulate. Art students use the scanners a lot; one was moved from a room near the circ desk up to the art floor. Though I'm only part-time and partly out of the loop, I don't hear or see evidence of mutilation or missing issues. The university shifted to new printers and print-job software this academic year, cloud-save for print jobs and now in color too.

Should have added that we have 2 flatbed scanners in the library, so if a student needs an article or image, they can scan and email it to themselves.  Since we do not have a color printer here, they need to go to one of the computer labs to do a printout.

Thanks Moira,

It's been interesting to read the range of approaches that libraries take to this issue.

I appreciate your input!

We don't (and won't) circulate journals, bound or otherwise, for that very reason.  Once in a great long while, I allow faculty to take something to class for a brief time, but that's VERY rare.

Hi fellow ARLIS/NA members,

We're facing a change of policy from not circulating journals (current or bound) to circulating all bound journals.  I'm curious whether it's common practice for academic libraries to circulate their bound art and architecture journals.  My concern is that images and articles from heavily illustrated journals are subject to removal or sometimes the entire issue 'walks'.  I have to admit that concern is based more on anecdotal evidence than any real data.  And perhaps, as we move forward into a digital world, it's not such a worry.  On the other hand, replacement costs (when replacement of an issue is even possible) are going up significantly.

So -- a straw poll (if you're interested):

Do you notice that heavily illustrated journals are subject to more damage than other journals?

If so, does your library take measures to prevent or address the issue?

Thanks much for your thoughts!
Rebecca
