Hello,

Here at the University of Maryland the Architecture periodicals do not circulate. We do have two flatbed scanners in the library, so there is ample opportunity to scan a favorite image. I also have let a professor remove a journal for class or overnight, but that is a case by case issue.

Best,
Cindy

Hello all.

At Colby College, we circulate single issues and bound volumes to students, faculty and staff within our Colby/Bates/Bowdoin consortium for 7 days. All other uses are in-house or through article requesting via interlibrary loan. However all of our bound periodicals are in storage :| due to space constraints, so they only are requested for loan by serious users I would say. I think the current periodicals, whether circulating or not, will tend to go if the will is there.

We don't (and won't) circulate journals, bound or otherwise, for that very reason. Once in a great long while, I allow faculty to take something to class for a brief time, but that's VERY rare.

Hi fellow ARLIS/NA members,

We're facing a change of policy from not circulating journals (current or bound) to circulating all bound journals. I'm curious whether it's common practice for academic libraries to circulate their bound art and architecture journals. My concern is that images and articles from heavily illustrated journals are subject to removal or sometimes the entire issue 'walks'. I have to admit that concern is based more on anecdotal evidence than any real data. And perhaps, as we move forward into a digital world, it's not such a worry. On the other hand, replacement costs (when replacement of an issue is even possible) are going up significantly.

So -- a straw poll (if you're interested):

Do you notice that heavily illustrated journals are subject to more damage than other journals?

If so, does your library take measures to prevent or address the issue?

Thanks much for your thoughts!
Rebecca
