We don't (and won't) circulate journals, bound or otherwise, for that very reason.  Once in a great long while, I allow faculty to take something to class for a brief time, but that's VERY rare.

Art is a kind of innate drive that seizes a human being and makes him its instrument. To perform this difficult office it is sometimes necessary for him to sacrifice happiness and everything that makes life worth living for the ordinary human being. —Carl G. Jung

Hi fellow ARLIS/NA members,

We're facing a change of policy from not circulating journals (current or bound) to circulating all bound journals.  I'm curious whether it's common practice for academic libraries to circulate their bound art and architecture journals.  My concern is that images and articles from heavily illustrated journals are subject to removal or sometimes the entire issue 'walks'.  I have to admit that concern is based more on anecdotal evidence than any real data.  And perhaps, as we move forward into a digital world, it's not such a worry.  On the other hand, replacement costs (when replacement of an issue is even possible) are going up significantly.

So -- a straw poll (if you're interested):

Do you notice that heavily illustrated journals are subject to more damage than other journals?

If so, does your library take measures to prevent or address the issue?

Thanks much for your thoughts!
Rebecca
