Dear Malcolm and all:
I am following this conversation with interest. Might I add other links to the mix?
I benefitted from thinking with the
bibliography from a Getty-sponsored summer institute organized by Sheila Brennan and Sharon Leon of Roy Rosenzweig Center For History and New Media in 2014. And in 2013, we at the Archives of American
Art hosted a symposium that featured several DH projects in American art history. Recordings of the talks are available on
our website. Diane Zorich also
reported on the proceedings. (This report follows nicely from her earlier
important survey of the art history, sponsored by Kress Foundation in 2012.)
With best wishes, Kelly Quinn

Malcolm,
I have a not-comprehensive but expanding DH bibliography on https://vrdighum.wordpress.com under
Resources.
There are some general books listed. I'd start with Digital_Humanities. It's concise and well-written.
I also maintain a Facebook page on Visual Resources + Digital Humanities that you can join. It gets a variety of posts about DH, not all image related.
There is also Miriam Posner's blog:

Collective wisdom:
Does anyone have favorite texts/articles on digital humanities? I feel a need to get up to speed.
Thanks,
