The Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2015 VRAF Professional Development Grants, one to support the advancement of an emerging professional and the other to support the work of an established career professional.  These grants can be used for conference attendance, enrollment in a workshop, or participation in research activities.

The 2015 VRAF Professional Grant recipient for an emerging professional is Lauren Paustian, Technical Services Librarian at the Leo Baeck Institute in New York. In her role working with the Institute’s special collections about German Jewish history and culture, she is involved in multiple grant-funded preservation and digitization projects. Lauren will use her grant to attend the 2016 ARLIS/NA-VRA joint conference in Seattle, where she hopes to learn additional professional skills and update her digital imaging skills to bring back to her institution, and engage more directly with a group of professionals who share similar backgrounds, experiences, and aspirations for their profession.

The 2015 VRAF Professional Grant recipient for an established professional is Kanako Iwase, the Visual Resources Librarian at University of Hawai’i at Manoa, a position she has held since 2009. Working in a one-person library, she is currently managing a data-migration of her image database to an open source, web-based system, despite the challenge of minimal of IT support.  Kanako will also use her grant to attend the ARLIS/NA-VRA joint conference in Seattle, her first opportunity to attend a conference of either organization, where she hopes to learn more about the application of new technologies, metadata standards and schema, and open-source image management platforms, as well as the latest trends in the image management field, and meet some of her colleagues in person.
