The Bunting Visual Resources Library, College of Fine Arts, University of New Mexico, announces VIRCONA.UNM.EDU, a re-boot of the web resource of the same name.

In 2002, the BVRL launched web-publication of VIRCONA, an acronym for a VIsual Resources Catalog Of Native American visual arts. VIRCONA, was created to be a shared resource of Native American visual artists and art on the Internet for the nonprofit use of educational, research, scholarly and cultural institutions. The well received project served as a valued scholarly and general interest resource until 2013, when its web host went out of business. After this unexpected hiatus, the web application rebuilding process is now complete, with the original look, goals and functions recreated as much as current technology permits, AND an expanded set of data and images.

The original site was supported by a grant from the Educational Foundation of America, and derives from the substantial teaching slide collections supporting Native American studies at UNM, especially the Native American art & art history graduate programs. Like the initial version, VIRCONA.UNM.EDU includes biographical information and a thumbnail-illustration for each artwork by named Native American artists, practicing in both traditional and contemporary modes. Artists may be represented by more than one artwork, but each object will be linked with a single illustration. When the information is available, a link is provided to the holding institution or repository. A much more thorough description of what VIRCONA is (and is not) is found here: http://vircona.unm.edu/Home/Read.

Your comments are welcome; I hope that with renewed interest in VIRCONA, the Bunting Library will be able to consider pursuit of funding to update and build out VIRCONA. I will be forwarding this notice to a number of associations, but please feel free to forward VIRCONA information to colleagues who might find it relevant.

Happy Indigenous Peoples Day & thanks for your interest,
Cindy
