We circulate journals for two hours (with the understanding that
journals are never to go out overnight). Students usually checked
them out to take them down the hall to scan them in the computer lab,
and for a while our journals circulated quite a lot. Now we have a
scanner in the library is both free and very fast, and we almost never
check out journals any more. Occasionally now someone will check out
a journal to take to class. My feeling (and this is totally
anecdotal) is that patrons are more likely to steal something or rip
out pages if they don't have an option to scan something or check out
the volume.
