Exhibits Developer - Washington University Libraries, St. Louis, MO

POSITION SUMMARY: The Exhibits Developer will be responsible for coordinating the Washington University Libraries' exhibition programming, in close consultation with curators, librarians and faculty. This includes the creation of budgets, schedules, design, layout, graphics and promotions for temporary and semi-permanent exhibitions. The Exhibits Developer will develop project concepts and implement the installation and design of exhibitions. Key responsibilities will involve the management of digital versions of physical exhibitions; outreach to faculty, students, staff and the general public; and special event preparation.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES: Develop and implement a cohesive vision and strategy for the exhibition of Special Collections materials in close consultation with curators, librarians and faculty; Contribute to the research and development of new exhibitions and projects that interpret the response of curators, donors and departments; Prepare and monitor an annual budget and expenses, seeking additional external funding as needed; Create effective interpretive materials, promotional materials and public programs for various audiences; Design and install exhibits appropriate to the needs of the artifacts being displayed; Illustrates concept by designing rough layout of materials and copy regarding arrangement, size, type size and style, and related aesthetic concepts; Manage travel exhibits and loan processes; Capable of multi-tasking, prioritizing & work in fast paced environment with tight deadlines; Implement programs aimed at engaging a new and diverse audience through a dynamic mix of exhibition, education and interpretation; Compose texts for various purposes (exhibition panels, audio guide texts, scripts, texts for media and all forms of promotion including publications, invitations, blog posts, and other social media; Document all objects, images, and exhibition elements; Supervision of every step from research to realization with restorers, designers, and other people involved in the exhibition process.

Minimum Education/Experience: Master's Degree in Art or Humanities or related field; 3-5 years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and exhibition design experience; Proven professional leadership to engage library staff, administrators, donors and other constituencies; Knowledge of constructing display pieces, matting, framing, and handling fragile artifacts and works of art; Proven ability to communicate creative concepts and interact with an academic community and the general public; Working knowledge of relevant software applications such as MS Office suite, Adobe Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) and open source platforms such as Omeka, Collection Space; Strong graphic art and computer skills; Experience working with websites, blogs, and social media; Evidence of excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; Excellent organization and analytic skills, with strong attention to detail; Ability to work independently and as a member of a team

Preferred Education/Experience: Prior experience working in an academic archives or special collections library; Subject knowledge in one or more of the Special Collections Library's primary collecting areas, such as modern American literature and history, rare books, civil rights history, modern graphic history, or university history
