Dear Retired, About-to-Be Retired, or Just-Thinking-About-It Members: I am excited to announce that the ARLIS/NA Executive Board has officially approved the formation of a Retired Members Special Interest Group! At least 21 ARLIS/NA members have expressed interest in the SIG; this includes two people who are also members of the VRA. In fact, Margaret Webster, who is currently Chair of the VRA Foundation Board of Directors and a former president of ARLIS/NA, has agreed to co-coordinate the group with me. I want to also acknowledge here Suzy Frechette's provocative posting last April concerning retired members' participation in ARLIS/NA that started a thread that got the ball rolling for this SIG's genesis . We look forward to meeting in Seattle to begin conversations that can remain informal or-at future conferences-to develop into sessions of interest to a broader audience. A few of those who have asked to be on the Retired Members contact list are actually not yet retired, but are either "on the verge" or are planning ahead and are very supportive. We also welcome VRA and AASL members, who are also meeting in Seattle, to the SIG meeting. We know that some retired members are lurking on ARLIS-L, but have not attended an annual conference for a while. If you are a retired "lurker," reading this today, we hope the existence of this SIG will motivate you to come to the beautiful city of Seattle next March 8 - 12, renew your acquaintance with ARLIS or VRA friends, share your stories, and perhaps contribute program ideas that could benefit presently retired, but still active members, as well as younger professionals.
