The ARLIS NA Diversity Committee is seeking speakers/panelists for the
proposal below:

*Connecting the Past to the Present: Promoting Cultural Understanding
through Collections and Exhibitions

*In order to fully comprehend the present we must understand the past. A
global society requires us to move beyond our cultural biases and be
open to the views and perspectives of others. Collections and
exhibitions that challenge and provoke can encourage dialogue and
promote understanding and awareness. The past is riddled with
controversial ideas and painful events. Those records and remnants of a
painful past live on in libraries and archives for us to learn from.
Librarians, archivists and curators play an important role in the
development of cultural learning and understanding. This session
features librarians/archivists/curators responsible for culturally
controversial collections and exhibitions which include race, gender,
politics, religion, and more. What are some of the challenges
encountered in promoting and encouraging understanding of these
collections and exhibitions? Each speaker will describe the history of
their collections and/or exhibitions and address how they are meeting
the challenges of safeguarding these collections and exhibitions while
promoting and guaranteeing access to them.

If you are interested in participating in this panel please provide a
brief description of your contribution, along with name, institution and
contact information by Wednesday June 24 to [log in to unmask] We are
hoping to secure 3 speakers for a 60 minute session.

With thanks,
Mary Kandiuk
