LIS Microaggressions is
soliciting Post-it submissions to be collected and included in the
second issue of our LIS Microaggressions zine, which will be distributed
at the upcoming Asian Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA) Symposium, as well as the ALA Annual Conference in San Francisco.
The completed zine will be distributed at
the roundtable discussion, “’Where Are You Really From?’ Dealing with
Microaggressions in the Workplace” that will be moderated by Cynthia
Mari Orozco, Annie Pho, Rose Love Chou, and T-Kay Sangwand. This
zine will also be distributed at the ALA Zine Pavilion and available for download on our site!
Our first issue of the LIS Microaggressions zine was distributed at ARLIS, ACRL, and RNCV this past March and April, and can be viewed on our website.
Definition: Microaggressions are brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioral, or environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial slights and insults toward individuals from marginalized communities. Microaggressions can be difficult to identify because they are more nuanced, subtle forms of prejudice. They may arise from the language we use with our peers, the assumptions we make of others, or perceived compliments.
Submissions: Snail mail your Post-it submission to the address below postmarked by Friday, May 22nd. Please write down or draw out your microaggression on a Post-it (or plain paper) no larger than 3x3. For written submissions, please use a permanent or felt tip marker. Submissions can be anonymous, or feel free to include your name/pseudonym/handle/etc.
