It is nice to hear that these kinds of collections still have value to some. I was sad to hear about Greg  Most’s experience. We all know we cannot keep everything nor should we I imagine---but it is also hard to hear that decisions are often being made about non-academics and/or those with no context or understanding of the material. That is what truly concerns me as we move forward in time and the digital era. Barbara Opar

The Picture Collection at Rhode Island School of Design is an important component of the library’s non-text visual resource collections. It is half a million clippings in size and is actively developed and weeded, supported by a full-time staff member and numerous student assistants. It is housed in an attractive space in the library, which also includes nearly 20,000 mounted reproductions and a large postcard collection. While its usage has decreased in the past half dozen years, it nevertheless performs a critical function by allowing students to explore visual artists, locations, or subjects in conceptual and physical ways that Google cannot replicate: the collection has been curated over the past half century from print sources that may never be digitized, offering a richness of depth that the Internet often cannot; it also allows students to create spatial collage-like displays of images that, again, cannot be replicated online. The Picture Collection is supported by faculty members who understand the value of this type of collection and include Picture Collection image research as part of their curriculum assignments.

Mary,

Just this week I dismantled our picture file. Our students no longer use our picture file like they did in the past—Google Images has made it pretty much obsolete. We’re excited to have some space opened up now that 24 filing cabinets will be removed!

Dear ARLISers,

I am curious as to whether any academic libraries still maintain a “picture file” (image file, clippings file, etc.) and index?

Newish librarian here – who has recently discovered ours and it’s taking up space with images that can (for the most part) be found elsewhere.

Kind regards,

Mary Wahl
