Dear Colleagues,

Following an extensive national search, it gives me great pleasure to
announce the appointment of Douglas Litts as the new Executive Director of
the Ryerson & Burnham Libraries, Art Institute of Chicago, effective July
27, 2015.

As the new Executive Director, Doug will be taking the helm of one of the
great art libraries in North America, with a collection of nearly 500,000
print titles, 100,000 auction catalogs, 1,000 serial subscriptions,
significant archival holdings of artist's and architect's papers, and a
growing collection of digital assets. In addition to overseeing a staff of
22 full-time employees, Doug will work closely with the curatorial,
publishing, digital experience and access, and education departments to
ensure that the Libraries' collections and digital resources develop in
alignment with the research, acquisition, and exhibition priorities of the
museum. As well, he looks forward to supporting the research of SAIC
students and faculty.

Doug comes to us from the Smithsonian Libraries, where he is Head Librarian
of the Smithsonian American Art Museum/National Portrait Gallery. For the
past 5 years he has been responsible for planning and directing all library
operations in support of the research needs of two world-class museums at
the Smithsonian Institution, the world's largest museum and research
complex. Prior to his successful tenure at the Smithsonian, he was Library
Director at the Corcoran College of Art + Design & Gallery, and Assistant
Librarian at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Doug holds an MS in Library and Information Science from the University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an MA in the History of Art and
Archaeology from New York University, with a specialization in Classical
Art. In his current position he is responsible for collection development
and access, care and preservation of rare materials and legacy collections,
and emerging initiatives in museum librarianship. Active on ARLIS/NA
committees and as an editor for ARLIS/NA *Reviews*, he has a nuanced
understanding of the balance between print and digital publishing in our
field, and maintains an up-to-date knowledge of current issues in the
history of art and architecture.

Please join me in congratulating Doug Litts on his new appointment.

Kind regards,
Anne
