Joan and all--
I also plan on attending the joint conference in Seattle and would be
interested in joining the conversation there or email (I apologize if all
this conversing is getting too voluminous for those that still have to put
in 35-40 hours a week at a job). I am as delighted that I don't have to go
an office several days a week as I am that I have been able to find a
combination of part-time and freelance jobs to supplement my income.
Perhaps naturally, none of those gigs include reimbursement for conference
travel.

My decision to attend ARLIS/NA (or VRA or College Art or SAH) has never
started with the question "do I have employer support?" For me, it was more
that I want (need) to go to the conference and how can I afford it? Over
the years, I worked for institutions that were generous in their support
and those that weren't so generous. I always knew I'd have to pony up
whatever wasn't covered by institutional support. Sometimes that meant
staying at an alternative hotel or with friends. NYU never supported meals
on the assumption that you had to eat anyway and you can make choices on
where you eat.
