Dear Suzy, Joan, Amy, et al. -

Thanks, Suzy, for this very timely and thoughtful suggestion.  I am a very new retiree and very interested in what could come of this - and I may even come to Seattle.  Joan - please add me to your "list."  Many thanks.

Right, Eric…  the idea of the original MLA post is to incorporate/integrate retired and soon-to-retire folks into the fabric of the organization and especially the annual conference.  How to do that effectively will be the challenge!  I seem to remember a conversation about this at the airport after the DC conference.  Is there something that can be done this year, without having to wait almost a whole year for a group to meet in Seattle?  While people are busily filling out the Fort Worth evaluation form, and pondering session proposals, perhaps our creative thinkers can suggest sessions and programs that make a start with this.

Those of us with MLA ties will watch what they develop, too, of course.

Best,

Suzy

Subject: Re: [ARLIS-L] Retired members and the future

As anyone who attended my talk at the mentoring session in Fort Worth well knows, I want as many retirees as possible at all of our conferences, and not just talking to each other.  As a mid-career librarian, 80% of what I know as a librarian, manager, museum professional and good citizen/steward of our profession comes from my mentors, many of whom are retired and many more who are near retirement.  Also, what is the point of these conferences if not to catch up with ones mentors, colleagues and friends.

All the best,

Eric
