Joan and Sherman,

Thanks for your comments. I agree that employer support should not be the decisive aspect in deciding whether or not to attend a professional conference. Sometimes I had support and other times I didn’t; however, I always knew that conference attendance was critical to my own professional development. Yes, I did all of those things that Joan mentions: rooming with colleagues, making alternative arrangements for lodging. Joan is also correct in pointing out that we were really fortunate and that our younger colleagues are often not able to participate in our conferences because of their personal circumstances. I agree with Joan that we need to listen attentively to those who feel that they are being left out. This is something that we should discuss.

I agree with Joan that ARLIS/NA could become a nexus for those of us who are retired and are retiring. This is a very talented cohort that could be harnessed to the benefit of the profession.

Just my 2 cents worth. Margaret

Dear Sherman:

So glad you are joining in the conversation and hope you will join us at our informal meeting in Seattle! Since my first meeting out of L.A. (where I lived at the time) I have also “never started with the question ‘do I have employer support?’ “ Like you, it was “how can I afford it?” Until I was able to afford it more regularly, I always had a roommate and (sometimes) stayed in the “alternative hotel.” But I know that there are members who truly can’t afford it, no matter what accommodations they make to save up during the year or make alternative arrangements at the conference site. Many simply do not have enough income and cannot bring in more because of other circumstances in their lives. Wages have certainly not gone up as much or as fast as hotel rates. Though they are not the same, virtual meetings are great. Maybe more of our meetings can be recorded.

I hope that you, Sherman, can contribute to the other retirement issue that has been raised: “how to incorporate retired . . . folks into the fabric of the organization.” I would add: why do some retirees feel unincorporated? Those of us that have synched with ARLIS/NA from the beginning, no matter our salaried status, need to listen very closely to what is being said by those who feel that they are being left out. What can ARLIS/NA do? What can those members do differently? We need to hear from a wide range of retirees and on-the-verge-of retirees and I hope that these thoughts will be expressed both before the Seattle conference and at our meeting. I will be collecting all comments and will perhaps compile and post them on ARLIS-L as we get closer to time to register for Seattle. Maybe someone (not me!) will even come up with a formal session proposal dealing with some of these issues?? Thanks again for writing, Sherman. It’s great to hear from you!

Joan

Joan and all--
I also plan on attending the joint conference in Seattle and would be interested in joining the conversation there or email (I apologize if all this conversing is getting too voluminous for those that still have to put in 35-40 hours a week at a job). I am as delighted that I don't have to go an office several days a week as I am that I have been able to find a combination of part-time and freelance jobs to supplement my income. Perhaps naturally, none of those gigs include reimbursement for conference travel.

My decision to attend ARLIS/NA (or VRA or College Art or SAH) has never started with the question "do I have employer support?" For me, it was more that I want (need) to go to the conference and how can I afford it? Over the years, I worked for institutions that were generous in their support and those that weren't so generous. I always knew I'd have to pony up whatever wasn't covered by institutional support. Sometimes that meant staying at an alternative hotel or with friends. NYU never supported meals on the assumption that you had to eat anyway and you can make choices on where you eat.

Dear Suzy, Joan, Amy, et al. -

Thanks, Suzy, for this very timely and thoughtful suggestion. I am a very new retiree and very interested in what could come of this - and I may even come to Seattle. Joan - please add me to your "list." Many thanks.

Right, Eric… the idea of the original MLA post is to incorporate/integrate retired and soon-to-retire folks into the fabric of the organization and especially the annual conference. How to do that effectively will be the challenge! I seem to remember a conversation about this at the airport after the DC conference. Is there something that can be done this year, without having to wait almost a whole year for a group to meet in Seattle? While people are busily filling out the Fort Worth evaluation form, and pondering session proposals, perhaps our creative thinkers can suggest sessions and programs that make a start with this.

Those of us with MLA ties will watch what they develop, too, of course.

Best,
Suzy

As anyone who attended my talk at the mentoring session in Fort Worth well knows, I want as many retirees as possible at all of our conferences, and not just talking to each other. As a mid-career librarian, 80% of what I know as a librarian, manager, museum professional and good citizen/steward of our profession comes from my mentors, many of whom are retired and many more who are near retirement. Also, what is the point of these conferences if not to catch up with ones mentors, colleagues and friends.

All the best,

Eric
