I am so very glad to see this much-needed multi-faceted project taking
shape! Thank you Heather and Marilyn for taking the lead on it!

Thank you for the mention Joan. This seems a perfect opportunity to reach
out about the number of projects I need to complete before the survey is
sent out this fall: 1. An Art Museum Libraries Directory and 2. Recommended
Statistical Standards for Art Museum Libraries.

For those who attended the Museum Libraries Division meeting in Fort Worth,
you have heard all this already. For those who did not attend, these two
projects are essentially in making sure the survey is statistically valid
and of high use to all art museum libraries.

I also want to say that I completely understand and encourage people to get
information in whatever means they can in the meantime, since I know you
are feeling the pressures to have some information now and not at the end of
the year.

Art Museum Libraries Directory

We currently do not have a list of Art Museum Libraries and their preferred
point of contact. This is important when there are multiple professional
staff in a library. We need one person to be in charge of receiving survey
information for this and future surveys.

I have started the draft but would like to crowdsource the information
gathering and checking.

Step one: Check to see if your own institution is on the list. Fill out the
relevant information including preferred point of contact. Step two: Look to
see if all of your local art museum libraries you know from your area are
listed and have their information correct.

Step three: Add art museum libraries that are not on the list.

Step four: If you don't think one of the listings really has an art museum
library, please let me know.

The institutions in the list were gathered from the ARLIS/NA Directory and
the Museum Directory-we've already seen instances of known art museum
libraries not being listed in either place so it is important to have
hundreds of eyes on this.

Recommended Statistical Standards for Art Museum Libraries

I would like a small working group to create recommended statistical
standards for art museum libraries. Once completed we can seek approval by
all relevant ARLIS/NA groups including the Board. From the Division meeting
I have Marilyn Carbonell, Anne Evenhaugen, and Matthew Gengler interested in
this project. I would like 1-2 more people to be on this and have meetings
start up in May.

If you would like to do this, please let me know.

Thank you dear colleagues for all your help!

Heather Slania, Director of the Betty Boyd Dettre Library and Research
Center at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, is preparing a survey of
art museum libraries in North America. But if you are in a hurry and don't
mind using stats that are a few years old, the "thumbnail sketches" section
of Art Museum Libraries and Librarianship (p.229 - 246) includes data from
15 art museum libraries here and abroad that was collected circa 2006. And
the Fall 2003 Art Documentation (v.22, no.2) reprises my 2002 survey of 34
"small" art museum libraries (libraries staffed by "solo" librarians). Of
course the current stats may be dramatically different and we are all
looking forward to seeing the results of Heather's survey.

Dear Alison and fellow art museum librarians,

I am also under considerable pressure to submit very similar statistics as
soon as possible. Is there a way to share through the Museum library SIG
blog that Catherine Petersen has set up? We were discussing the need for
comparative stats. I am willing to submit ours and would appreciate shared
data, as Alison is requesting.

               Thanks also, Marilyn

Subject: [ARLIS-L] Museum Library Usage

Fellow museum librarians,

I have another inquiry. My administration is showing some concern about
library usage. We keep stats on our library attendance and circulation
(this includes both checkouts and in house use). I know different libraries
have different use and circulation policies, some with public hours, some by
appointment only.

I am interested in trying to get an idea of how our library compares in
usage to other museum libraries.

If you have the time could you answer the following questions?

1. Do you have public hours?

2. Do you serve any significant patron base outside of museum staff?
students for example

3. Who is the biggest user of your physical library space? (for
example, our staff uses our collection, but almost always uses it in their
own offices).

4. What is your annual library attendance?

5. Does any of your collection circulate outside of the library?

6. Do you keep circulation stats (including for library use only
material)?

7. If you have circulation stats, what is your annual circulation?

I won't be sharing any information with institution names attached.

Thank you so much for any help you can provide,

Alison
