FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Art Libraries Society of North America honors Daniel Starr with the 2014 Distinguished Service Award

Fort Worth, TX (March 30, 2015) - The Art Libraries Society of North America is pleased to announce Daniel Starr as the 2014 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award, the twenty-fourth person who has been honored. The Distinguished Service Award honors an individual of any country whose exemplary service in art librarianship, visual resources curatorship, or a related field, has made an outstanding national or international contribution to art information.

Daniel is the Associate Chief Librarian at the Thomas J. Watson Library, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The award was presented by Ted Goodman and Sherman Clarke at the ARLIS/NA conference convocation ceremony held in Fort Worth, Texas on Sunday March 22, 2015.

The international letters of support for his nomination conveyed the profound influence that Daniel has had on ARLIS/NA and art librarianship. He was described as generous, enthusiastic, singular, and engaged, and praised as an innovator, mentor, collaborator and teacher.

Daniel has served ARLIS/NA for 30 years in a variety of leadership positions including President, Chair of the Cataloging Advisory Committee and liaison to the ALA Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access. Under Daniel's Presidency, ARLIS/NA began the process of developing its brand and unique graphic identity, strengthened its financial health with the formation of the Society Circle, and embarked on outreach initiatives to attract younger professionals.

Daniel's brief acceptance speech recounted how he began working at the Art Institute of Chicago's Ryerson and Burnham Libraries as a teenager and thanked the librarians who took him under their wing, trained him, and taught him to mix work and humor. He moved to New York to take the position of Senior Cataloger at The Museum of Modern Art, and was later promoted to Chief Librarian, Technical Services and Planning. He summed up by saying "a simple career: three great libraries in three great museums. The one constant has always been ARLIS/NA."

The members of the ARLIS/NA Distinguished Service Award Committee are: Susan V. Craig (Chair), Jon Evans, Amanda Bowen, and Carole Ann Fabian (ARLIS/NA President and DSA Board Liaison).
