Reader Services Librarian - The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL


The Art Institute of Chicago is currently seeking a library professional that will manage the Reader Services Department and provide reference and research services.

  1.  With the Executive Director, determines Reader Services policies and priorities. Develops short-term and long-term strategies for provision of services and makes recommendations to the Executive Director on the Reader Services budget.
  2.  Oversees and coordinates access, reference, research and instructional services, interacting with other library and museum departments as required.
  3.  Manages library web pages using content management software, including content creation for the libraries and coordination with other museum departments.
  4.  Recruits, hires, trains and supervises professional Reader Services staff. Schedules hours, allocates duties and evaluates performance.
  5.  Plans and conducts regular departmental and reference staff meetings.
  6.  Plans and provides reference training for staff with reference desk responsibilities.
  7.  Provides reference service at the reference desk on a regularly scheduled basis. Provides reference and research services for museum staff on demand. Responds to reference questions in various channels on a regular basis. Handles restricted special collections materials for library users by appointment.
  8.  Presents library collections and services to internal and external groups as required. Provides orientations for new library users as necessary and instruction to various user groups, including docents, students, and interns.
  9.  Manages the Friends of the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries programs and the library exhibition program (coordinates exhibition schedule, edits labels) and creates exhibitions
  10. Compiles annual statistics.
  11. Participates in the recruitment and hiring of professional staff in other library departments.
  12. Conducts research and pursues special projects as required.
  13. Directs the Library in the absence of the Executive Director.
  14. Contributes to the processing of Interlibrary Loan Requests.


Qualifications
MLS from an ALA-accredited program. Substantial knowledge of Art History. At least three years relevant experience in Reader Services. Demonstrated skills in personnel management. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong commitment to public service. Ability to work collaboratively with staff from all areas of the library and the museum.
