Plastic Age: IN/OUT

Floor
The Art and Picture
Collections at Mid-Manhattan Library present Plastic Age: IN/OUT a site-specific exhibition of photographs and a sculptural
installation by artist and educator Barbara Madsen. Her work is a hybrid practice between photography, print
and sculpture. Portraits a series of
photographic banners of inanimate plastic objects occupy the windows of
the Corner Room on 5th Avenue and 40th Street. The sculptures, stacked
on top of each other facing Fifth Avenue, are architectural plywood
structures, jutting walls, boxed, minimal, and acute. The angled surfaces are
covered with photographs of objects that have been consumed and discarded. Vibrant color plays a central tenant in her cast of objects: the child's
crimson fireman's ladder; lime colored dome from a hair drier; cobalt, yellow,
scarlet plastic remnants of toys. Within the complex shadows and highlights of
the images, dust and flaws are naked as the invisible becomes
visible.
Artist B. Wurtz joins Barbara Madsen for An Artist Dialogue on Saturday March 28 at 2:30 p.m. inside the Corner room. They converse about Madsen's Art in the Corner Room, Art in the Windows and Photo Walls in Picture Collection site specific exhibitions as well as what inspires their work.
Art
in the Corner Room series is curated by Arezoo
Moseni.
Please stay tuned for additional exhibitions opening in the Picture Collection and Fifth Avenue vitrines...
