In "A Companion to Medieval Art: Romanesque and Gothic in Northern Europe"
the author states:

"As early as the eleventh century, drawings of hybrid monsters appeared
alongside verbal descriptions in pedagogical texts known as the *versus
rapportati*, which were elementary exercises designed to practice cognitive
pattern formation. The parts that make up the hybrids provide a visual cue
to the “division” of verses into smaller parts which must be recombined in
order to make any sense of them. Monstrous exercises thus facilitated the
ability to invent or recombine familiar material in new ways"

I am looking for a visual cue/image of this "monstrous exercise" and hope
this collective wisdom might be able to help.

Many thanks,
Ethan
