Artist Patricia Dahlman begins the event with a presentation on her past and present work particularly focusing on Big Open Book, the site specific piece she made for Art Wall on Third exhibition series. The presentation is followed by a discussion between the distinguished curator Margaret Mathews-Berenson and Patricia Dahlman talking about her influences, materials and making contemporary art today. 

 

Patricia Dahlman is a New York City area artist and works mainly with fabric. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and studied art at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio and Yale University Summer School of Art and Music in Norfolk, Connecticut. Dahlman is a recipient of a New Jersey Printmaking Fellowship at Rutgers Center for Innovative Print and Paper, two Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation Fellowships to attend Vermont Studio Center and Virginia Center for Creative Arts, a Puffin Foundation Grant Award, a Yaddo Residency and a Gallery Aferro Studio Residency. She has exhibited her work throughout the United States including exhibitions at George Adams Gallery in New York, Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek, California; Jersey City Museum in Jersey City, New Jersey; and The Center For Book Arts in New York. Her solo exhibition The Art and Science of Happiness: Patricia Dahlman was held as part of the Dana Women Artist Series, at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey in 2010. 

 

Margaret Mathews-Berenson is an independent curator, art educator and advisor with special expertise in contemporary art and photography. She founded her own business in 1984 following a career in museum work (at the Philadelphia Art Museum and Metropolitan Museum of Art) and book publishing. Since then, she has advised collectors (corporate and private) and curated numerous exhibitions for museums, galleries and non-profit institutions throughout the United States. Among her recent exhibition projects are Homeland [IN]Security: Vanishing Dreams at the Dorsky Curatorial Programs space in Long Island City, New York and Women and Prints : A Contemporary View at the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery, Scripps College, Claremont, California. A dedicated arts professional and advocate for the art community, Berenson served on the boards of ArtTable, Artists Space, the Dieu Donné Papermill, and Swiss Institute, among others. From 1997 to 1998, she was director of The Drawing Society and editor-in-chief of  Drawing magazine. An accomplished lecturer and writer in the field of contemporary art, her articles and catalogue essays have been published in ARTS, American Artist, Drawing, The Pastel Journal and Sculpture magazines. Through her tour program, Art Today, she offers specialized lectures and travel opportunities. Recent tours included The Snow Show in Finland as well as biennials in Miami and New Orleans. As an arts educator, she has taught in the graduate program of Arts Administration at New York University, the International Center of Photography, and the Christie’s Masters in Education Program. She is currently on the faculty of the 92nd Street Y in New York. 

 

Initiated and organized by Arezoo Moseni in 2004, Artist Dialogues Series provide an open forum for understanding and appreciation of contemporary art. Artists are paired with critics, curators, gallerists, writers or other artists to converse about art and the potential of exploring new ideas.
