Dear Roberto and colleagues,

I regret that it is not possible for me to attend this very interesting symposium offered by our good friends at Columbia. Nor will I be able to attend ARLIS in Texas.

But I do want to put a shout out to support a broader discussion across ARLIS regarding "object-centered learning," and what that means for us a collection builders and access providers in the 21st century art, architecture, and design library. At Stanford we are investing considerable time in working with faculty, students, and... what to call it? Object based instruction? Object based study? Good old "primary sources"?

Now at this point I either embark on the long harangue or simply state, whether I am working with students and our run of Novyi Lef, or squeezing one of our Kim Jones toy plastic rats ("...squeek, squeek, squeek..."), I am hoping to imbue the moment with some notion of the "authenticity."

Workshop, session, "Ask ARLIS" (remember those), seems a natural for conference programming in the future.
