“unicus” modifies “homo”, not (as in “homo unius libri”, “man of one book”) “libris”.  And “libris” is dative or ablative plural, whether masculine, as in “books” (liber), or feminine, as in “scales” (libra).  Beyond that I’m not yet sure.  “A man singular in/with respect to [his] books”?  Something like that might well have been intended as a play on the other.  But I’m a bit rusty when it comes to the ablative (http://dcc.dickinson.edu/allen-greenough/Chapters/Chapter-398.html) not governed by a preposition.  Is this John Davis Barnett?

Subject: [ARLIS-L] latin translation question

Hello, I am working on a digital collection of bookplates from the Seattle Art Museum libraries, and was wondering if anyone can help me on a question of Latin translation.

The bookplate of J. Davis Barnett bears the saying of Homo unicus libris. I believe this is a play on the phrase homo unius libri, perhaps meaning man of unique books, or man of only books, or maybe he just erred. If anyone has any advice, I would be grateful to hear it.

Thank you,

Joel Irving
