I thought I’d also chime in by saying that I too wish I could attend such a session, and by sharing a quote from Gustav Ecke that my husband likes to repeat. My husband was part of one of the first classes of students admitted at the East West Center at the Univ. of Hawaii. Gustav Ecke offered a casual, open-ended, Saturday art history class at the Honolulu Academy of Art. The quote involves Gustav holding a Chinese jade ritual object in his hands, closing his eyes, rubbing his fingers lovingly over the surface, and then exclaiming with delight as he opened his eyes: “soooo sensual, but abstract and spiritualized, don’t you know!” I know I can’t do him justice, but the point is that even in the analog age, object-centered learning was rather poignant.

On another point, perhaps related or parallel to this topic, it seems to me that material samples collections have grown in importance in architectural education during this ‘digital age.’ Presumably in response to the need for our students to be exposed to the physical properties of materials (weight, texture, light reflection, transparency, etc.).

Kudos to the symposium organizers,

Dear Roberto and colleagues,

I regret that it is not possible for me to attend this very interesting symposium offered by our good friends at Columbia. Nor will I be able to attend ARLIS in Texas.

But I do want to put a shout out to support a broader discussion across ARLIS regarding "object-centered learning," and what that means for us a collection builders and access providers in the 21st century art, architecture, and design library. At Stanford we are investing considerable time in working with faculty, students, and... what to call it? Object based instruction? Object based study? Good old "primary sources"?

Now at this point I either embark on the long harangue or simply state, whether I am working with students and our run of Novyi Lef, or squeezing one of our Kim Jones toy plastic rats ("...squeek, squeek, squeek..."), I am hoping to imbue the moment with some notion of the "authenticity."

Workshop, session, "Ask ARLIS" (remember those), seems a natural for conference programming in the future.

Required reading:

Pierre Bourdieu. The Field of Cultural Production. 1993.

This is a huge issue for us.

Huge.

Regards all,

Peter
