The MARC Advisory Committee (MAC) will be considering six proposals and one discussion paper at its meetings at ALA Midwinter in Chicago on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. MAC advises the MARC Steering Group on changes to the MARC 21 communication formats and provides a forum for broad and open discussion of bibliographic standards used for the representation of bibliographic data in machine-readable form.  As ARLIS/NA representative to MAC, I welcome comments on the papers, which I have summarized below. Links to full texts of the papers are available at:

If you have any questions about the papers, or comments that you would like aired during the meetings, please let me know.

MARC PROPOSAL NO. 2015-01 (Defining Values in Field 037 to Indicate a Sequence of Sources of Acquisition in the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format)

This paper proposes changes to Field 037 (Source of Acquisition) that would facilitate tracking the acquisition source(s) of electronic serials. It proposes the definition of values for Indicator 1 in Field 037 to sequence sources of acquisition. It also proposes the definition of subfields $3 and $5 so that the materials and institution or organization to which a source of acquisition applies can be recorded.

MARC PROPOSAL NO. 2015-02 (Adding Dates for Corporate Bodies in Field 046 in the MARC 21 Authority Format)

This paper proposes that date of establishment and date of termination of a corporate body be  accommodated in Field 046 (Special Coded Dates). Previously, these dates were not distinguished in Field 046 from dates of activity for a corporate body, causing ambiguity in the coding.

MARC PROPOSAL NO. 2015-03 (Description Conversion Information in the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format)

This paper is looking forward to an environment where cataloging agencies create records in BIBFRAME and then convert them to MARC for loading into local systems, OCLC, etc.  It proposes defining a new field in the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format for recording information regarding the process used for the conversion of data in a description.  This will let other catalogers know that there is a BIBFRAME version available that can also be accessed, and also explain any peculiarities in the MARC record itself. The field could also be used to identify records converted from other formats, such as MODS or Dublin Core.

MARC PROPOSAL NO. 2015-04 (Broaden Usage of Field 088 in the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format)

This paper proposes broadening the usage of field 088 (Report Number) in bibliographic records to include series numbers (in particular for series in technical report and government publications) by deleting the sentence "Not used to record a number associated with a series statement" in field 088's field definition and scope.

MARC PROPOSAL NO. 2015-05 (Definition of New Code for Leased Resources in Field 008/07 in the MARC21 Holdings Format)

This paper proposes the definition of a new code for leased resources in 008/07 (Method of acquisition) in the MARC21 Holdings Format. This will allow catalogers to make a distinction between permanent and temporary purchase, an increasingly common phenomenon for e-resources.

MARC PROPOSAL NO. 2015-06 (Defining New Subfield in Field 382 for Coding Number of Ensembles in the MARC 21 Bibliographic and Authority Formats)

This paper proposes that subfield $e (Number of ensembles) be added to field 382 (Medium of Performance) in order to allow for the coding of number of ensembles.

MARC Discussion Paper No. 2015-DP01 (Recording RDA Format of Notated Music in the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format)

This paper presents options for recording the RDA data element Format of Notated Music in the Bibliographic format. It argues that musical format, which is crucial for finding, selecting, identifying, and obtaining a resource, is more or less buried in the 300 field and the 500 field, and makes a case for defining a separate field for this important piece of data.  Although it focuses on notated music, the issues it raises are also applicable to art works.
