We have been using Understanding Art by Lois Fichner-Rathus.  It looks like in the Spring they will be moving to Gateways to Art: Understanding the Visual Arts by Debra J. DeWitte.
Some have used Gardner's Art Through the Ages.

I'm asking this question for a friend. Is anyone out there using Gombrich as a survey text? What are the most commonly used textbooks now? Although I do collection development, we don't buy textbooks for the library, so I'm a little out of touch with what the faculty are using. Is Janson still the most commonly used textbook in the US?

You can reply directly to me and I'll summarize to the list if others are interested.

thanks,
Karen Bouchard
